Our Story

Founded by Kittipod Tongchan and Surachai Kunchairattana, the duo behind the neighboring Thai BBQ spot Aunglo, Khao Melbourne was born out of a passion for authentic Northern Thai cuisine. Their mission is to introduce Melburnians to the depth and diversity of Thai flavors, focusing on traditional dishes that are often hard to find outside of Thailand .

Find Your Flavor, Savor the Moment

The Menu

At the heart of Khao Melbourne's offerings is their signature khao soi. This creamy coconut curry soup is served with egg noodles and topped with your choice of protein, including flame-seared salmon, tender Wagyu beef, or the ever-popular fried chicken. Each bowl is accompanied by traditional garnishes like pickled mustard greens, raw red onion, crispy fried noodles, and a wedge of lime, allowing you to customize each bite to your liking .

Beyond khao soi, the menu features other Northern Thai specialties. The kanom jeen nam ngiao is a lesser-known dish that combines rice vermicelli with a spicy and sour pork broth, topped with stir-fried pork mince and cherry tomatoes. It's a hearty and flavorful option that's not commonly found outside of Thailand .

For those seeking shareable bites, Khao offers a selection of appetizers perfect for starting your meal. Crispy prawn wontons, golden spring rolls, and steamed pork tapioca balls are among the favorites. For something unique, try the ma haw—a sweet and savory minced pork and prawn mixture served atop a slice of fresh fruit .

Don't skip dessert at Khao. The menu features a variety of Thai-inspired sweets, including bingsu (shaved ice desserts) and thick slices of milk bread toast topped with house-made kaya, brûléed banana, and more. The Thai milk tea bingsu, adorned with fresh whipped cream and toasted almonds, is a standout. For coconut lovers, the coconut bingsu uses every part of the coconut—milk, water, and flesh—for a refreshing treat

The ambiance at Khao Melbourne is as inviting as its menu. The long dining room features an open kitchen that runs the length of the space, allowing diners to watch as chefs tend to boiling pots of khao soi broth and flip pans of golden-brown milk toast. A large architectural tree reaches towards the double-height ceiling, giving the space a light and airy feel .
